just got a seagate external hd. it hooked up and recognized fine, but now whenever i reboot or power cycle, there's a problem loading the os. it won't boot till i turn off the external hd, reboot, and then turn it back on once it's booted xp. i want to be able to just have the external hd on all the time and re boot my computer at will.

btw, im running xp pro on a year old hp office computer.

The partition on the external may be set to Active, so the computer is trying to boot it.

Go into the BIOS setup and change the boot order of devices so the computer will try to boot internal hard disk before the external (USB ?) one.

I had the same problem with a Maxstor. It turned out, from *all* the sources I found, it was *necessary* to turn off the external drive at boot time. I diddled and diddled as much as I could, even diddling bios settings to bypass USB at boot, (f12 and such) and couldn't bypass the sucker getting in the way of a boot! So 's far as I can tell, you'll just have to live with it?

Maybe my case was different, though. Mine was an external Maxstor, on a powered USB hub...

just set the bios to not boot from it or search for it when you start or reboot

specific, its achievable... use partition magic so as to partition thechronic besides together as installation different working gadget go with the perfect disk partition and additionally go with boot device priority to usb disk in cmos placing.. while u choose to apply linx then first plug the disk and trun computing device on. it is going to function linx. besides u choose to apply the build in working gadget so dont plug the exterior before truning on the computing device.
