Suppose the container contains x gal.
Then:
x / 2 + 2 = 2x / 3
Multiply by 6:
3x + 12 = 4x
x = 12gal.

First we must figure out how much of the container 2 gallons filled up by themselves, we subtract its initial fill from how full it is after the 2 gallons are added to see how much space 2 gallons takes up:

2/3 - 1/2 = 4/6 - 3/6 = 1/6

So two gallons takes up 1/6 of the container, meaning that you can do it six times and it will be completely full.

2 = 1/6

2 gallons = 1/6 of container

We multiply both sides by 6

12 = 1

12 gallons = 1 container

So it can hold 12 gallons.

OK:

Call V the volume of container

2 gallons = V * 2/3 - V *1/2 = V (2/3-1/2) = V/6

=> V = 6*2 = 12 gallons

That means that 2 gallons = 2/3 - 1/2 = 4/6 - 3/6 = 1/6
of tank capacity.
Let x be the number of gallons the tank can hold
then 2 = x/6, so x = 12.
Check: 6 = 12/2 and 8 = 12 * 2/3.

1/2 = 3/6
2/3= 4/6
so 2 gallons =1/6
1/6 x 6 =1
so 2 x 6 = 1 whole container

The container holds 12 gallons

just a quick look at the problem, and just take the difference of 2/3 and 1/2 so...2/3 - 1/2 = 1/6...so 2 gallons equals 1/6...then you know can divide the whole container into 6ths, so there is 6 of them...so then 2 gallons, per 1/6 equals 12 gallon jug

Let capacity = V gallons
Start with V/2 gallons
V/2 + 2 = (2/3).V
3V + 12 = 4V
V = 12
Container can hold 12 gallons

2/3-1/2 = 1/6
So 2 gallons = 1/6 of total,
So total = 12 gallons

Twelve. An additional 2/3 - 1/2 of its capacity was added, or 1/6.
