I see a lot of people using the English language incorrectly. I read a sentence that read like this..."Your the best friend ever."

I also see things like this..."We want be able to go tonight."

Am I the only one who sees what's wrong with these two sentences?

We won't be able to go out tonight.

You're my best friend...

those are the correct ways to spell.

Are you kidding? (or r u kidding?). I mark essays for a living. At times I feel as though I personally am keeping the red pen industry alive.

Actually the problem is two-fold.

Education taught and to some extent still teaches phonetics.

Spell how you hear it.

If you have an accent, you're going to hear things differently and spell them differently especially if you learned under the "old guard" of "phonetics" or even "urbonics" to a certain degree.

The other reason is the internet itself.

People have developed their own language and in turn have become sloppy when actually typing and not bothering to proof-read because no one is "marking them" (as in school).

Besides, if you know what the sentence "We want be able to go tonight." means then why would people change the way they type?

It is annoying but at the same time, as long as I can understand it, then I'm okay with it.

No, you aren't the only one who sees what is wrong with those sentences. If you are seeing these errors in some sort of professional style writing like a reference book or a newspaper then they probably should have been corrected. If, on the other hand, you are seeing them in a book or something then maybe they were used for effect. Sometimes we just have to try and ignore the mistakes of others because that is what they are - mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes.

You have a lot of people on YA who agree with you!
Maybe some people to whom English is a language not spoken at home or in their countries, would spell poorly, and this could be excused. However, there is no way we can find out about this on YA unless the writer admits to this.
Internet chat and SIMS have contributed a lot to making this problem of bad spelling worse. It is a sign of the changing times!
As some answerers have rightly pointed out, poor teaching and lack of desire to work hard and learn, are the other causes. The anguish expressed so eloquently by one correcting essays, would be shared by many.
Those who care for spelling, would surely use the spell check provided in YA. It is rather difficult to force people to use this admirable facility.

No, you're not -- the your and you're thing drives me nuts -- I see it in printed material often. Also, leaving words out is common in printed material -- we want TO be...

Another mistake I sometimes see involves there, their and they're. Misspelled words are plentiful -- even with spell checking -- some people just don't bother to use it. Not everyone really cares about this subject, but you are certainly are not the only one who does! (I left the 2 "ares" in on purpose, another common mistake!)

No, it's not just you. One of my friends actually thought that the plural of 'grass' was 'grasses'. Another thought that a person who performs archery was an 'archerer' rather than an 'archer'. Though, my pet hate has to be people who can't distinguish between 'your' and 'you're'. Education today...

you're not the only person - it's just a matter of laziness and bad education - I wonder sometimes how people can learn another language successfully if they can't even manage their own
