If you don't value your own opinion, who else will? Sure, some people get downright offensive and discourteous with theirs. It's annoying, but at least they have a solid one. It's better to have a clear idea of what you believe, and an internal code of ethics and conduct that guides you through life than to just listen to everything everybody else says around you and repeat it.
You'll also notice that the more educated an opinion is, the less forceful it is. This, I like to think, is a natural mechanism for making good ideas easier to spot. It certainly makes reading other responses on Y!A a lot easier.
Still, opinions are important. It's good to have them because they establish an identity. What you believe to be true, based upon your experiences and prior knowledge and learning really are a big part of what makes you you. Some people need to be forceful to have the 'me' heard. They need attention, and I understand that. I also understand that their opinions will likely not be worth reading through. Still. I hope this answers your question.

I agree, open minds are very preferable to those closed steel traps some folks possess. But to answer your question, opinions by their very definition are an extension of what people believe is right. Having an opinion about something doesn't excuse rude behavior, but generally speaking the human race has never been known for being tolerant.

having an open mind does not usually win a battle. however open minds develope in a society where cllosed minds have failed to convince people of the right way of doing something ( which is the way that was shown to them). sometimes change comes about from discovery or sometimes it comes about by brute force. in the long run discovery will win.

They have not been taught how to distinguish opinion from fact.
There are Atheists who are rude, arrogant, and closed-minded. There are Christians who are rude, closed-minded and arrogant. There are polite and respectful people in both of those groups.
Thank you for wanting respectful and open discussion.

When a person strongly feels that his opinion is right , it is mostly because he is jeolous of something which you stand to gain over him . It is meant to deviate you from it or reject so that you are below him in his mental balance of scale
