I want to host an online chat from my website. The event is a special visitor. I need to be able to disable others from openly chatting during most of it and then turn it on for questions and answers. What kind of tools are out there for this. How is it done?

One tool we have used at our company is a program called "WebEx" which is an online conferencing tool much like a chat room but has the ability to host what are known as "Webinars" or "Web seminars"

People sign up for the webinar (so you know who is coming) and then they connect to a special channel at a certain time, providing a key to access it. You can do heavy web presentations or a mix with voice conferencing etc through a phone.

You can control the presentation and mute everyone until Q&A etc.

Give it a look see... there is a free trial with it so you could do it for this one event for free and see if you like it.

I hope it works for what you want to do. The link below provides you the overview of how it works.
