Yakuza (やくざ or ヤクザ, Yakuza?), also known as gokudō (極道), are members of traditional organized crime groups in Japan. Outside of Japan, the term also refers to traditional Japanese organized crime in general. Today, the yakuza are one of the largest organized crime phenomena in the world.

In Japanese legal terminology, yakuza organizations are referred to as bōryokudan, literally "violence groups". Yakuza members consider this an insult, as bōryokudan is a term which can be applied to any violent criminal. In the Western press they are sometimes called the "Japanese mafia", by analogy with other traditionally Italian-Sicilian organized crime groups of the same name. For a list of present and past yakuza gangs, see the bōryokudan page.

There are Yakuza all over Japan. Even in small towns there will be someone who is affiliated even if loosely. Outside of Tokyo the Yamaguchi-gumi or their affiliated gangs are in control. Within the Tokyo area the Inagawa-kai is a loose alliance of independent gangs who have banded together to keep the Yamaguchi-gumi out of Tokyo.

Recently the boss of Ginza has sworn an oath of loyalty to a Yamaguchi-gumi boss, so there could be trouble brewing there. All of this is no secret, there is a Gokudo magazine that publishes photographs of their induction ceremonies, etc. The cops make sure to read it every month. If you really want to meet Yakuza, go to a Kabuki-cho bar, run up a huge tab (very easy to do!) and then refuse to pay. Rafa has a point about the sento though. The sento and onsen that tolerate tattooed men, tend to get lots of tattooed men in my experience.

The places known with big yakuza organizations are Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka.
I'm not sure how to meet them safely for the purpose as you wish, but I think it's better keeping away from them.

Their historical origin is said Mushuku-nin or Tosei-nin, that means the people dropped out from being governed and employed, and are spending life in underground casino.
Mitsuhiro Suganuma, the former manager of Public Security Intelligence Agency, said that yakuza organization consists of 60% historically disciminated people, 30% illegal immigrants from Korea, and others are Japanese and Chinese.

crimelibrary.com has plenty of information about the Yakuza. It's not difficult to encounter Yakuza if you hang around bars and Pachinko parlours in places like Kabuki-cho. I was once in a bar with a bunch of drunk Yakuza in one corner. It's not as glamorous as you might think.

Japan is between the safest countries contained in the completed global. you are able to stroll with the help of the streets in downtown Tokyo previous due at evening and not in any respect something will ensue worse than perchance a pair of drunken jap salarymen bumping into you. opportunities are severe as a vacationer you'd be not likely to even are available contact with a yakuza, or perhaps if you do they don't look to be going to do something ugly. The yakuza are specifically perform playing establishments and do personal loan sharking; i have infrequently heard of them being occupied with any variety of violent crime. i have wide-spread quite a few yakuza and maximum of them were genuinely very fantastic, neighborly human beings as long as you probably did not owe them funds. in a unmarried memorable social gathering, quite a few yakuza got here by in the course of the evening and pounded on the door of a neighbor who grow to be heavily in debt, stressful their funds. They broke a pair issues and woke a superb deal of community up with their yelling. the subsequent morning they got here by to each and each of the acquaintances and deeply apologized for having rudely wakened us in the course of the evening. oftentimes you are able to spot yakuza genuinely, as they are the in basic terms human beings in Japan with tattoos, and they commonly stand out with their unusual hairstyles, darkish sun shades, and hard demeanor. in case you do spot one, do in basic terms not problem him and he received't furnish you with variety of problem.

Go to an onsen (in Tokyo - there are some particular ones such as one in Asakusa) on a daily basis in the evening, say 11pm and you're bound to bump into one whislt bathing. You might not want to disturb them however...
