a ratio is simply one number divided by another.

example 45:50 that is 45 is to 50

the way to simplify any ratio is to find a common factor of each term

(In the case above it is 5 )

Next divide each term by that factor and the remaining numbers will be the ratio simplified

45/ 5 = 9 and 50/5 = 10, thus 45:50 is the same as 9:10

There is no formula but a few examples might help:-
20 : 60 = 1 : 3
4 : 6 = 2 : 3
15 : 45 = 5 : 15 = 1 : 3
33(1/3) : 200 = 100 : 600 = 1 : 6
The basic rule is to divide (or multiply) first and second number by the SAME thing.

divide the both numbers by the smaller number,
for example:

12:4
so i'd do 12 divided by 4 = 3
and 4 divided by 4 = 1
so the ratio is 3:1
