A criminal complaint released Tuesday (17 April 2007) reveals new details about several arrests made in connection with a suspected eco-terrorism plot in the Sacramento area.
The arrests of 28-year-old Eric McDavid, 20-year-old Lauren Weiner, and 20-year-old Zachary Jensen came after a lengthy investigation involving the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.
According to the complaint, the three were arrested on Friday for "conspiring to damage or destroy certain property by explosive or fire, including the United States Forest Service Institute of Forest Genetics and certain other publicly- and privately-owned infrastructures."
The complaint goes on to say that "the investigation ... utilizes a confidential source (CS) who is deeply imbedded within the subjects' cell. The CS has worked for the FBI since early 2004. S/he has agreed to testify in court."
According to the complaint, on Jan. 10, the suspects scoped out the Nimbus Dam and Forest Service Institute in Placerville. On Jan. 11, they allegedly bought ingredients for a homemade bomb at an area Wal-Mart store.
When McDavid was arrested on Jan. 13 in Auburn, agents said they found a notebook on him, which contained a diagram of the Forest Service Institute and pictures of pipe bombs.
FBI officials said they are taking the case very seriously because the three suspects are believed to be associated with eco-terror group Earth Liberation Front. ELF is believed to be responsible for $100 million in damage over the last decade.
Suspects In Court
The three suspects appeared in federal court in Sacramento Tuesday for their arraignment.
In court, Assistant U.S. District Attorney described the suspects Ellen Endrizzi as misguided and dangerous.
"ELF is a group that doesn't really have a leader; however, we know that Eric McDavid has strong ties to Ryan Lewis and that the group met with Eva Holland while they were in San Francisco just a few days ago," Endrizzi said.
Authorities said they have connected Lewis and Holland to ELF.
The three suspects were denied bail. Endrizzi said they are a flight risk.
"They are all unemployed. McDavid and Jensen hopped the rails and hitchhiked across country," Endrizzi.
If convicted of conspiracy charges, they could face up to 20 years in prison.
