Names always hurt more in my experience. In fact, I've heard another version of that saying:
Sticks and stones will break my bones
but names can also hurt me.
As words do not just fade away
they stay like ghosts that haunt me.
Pain from words has left its scar
on mind and heart that's tender.
Cuts and bruises now have healed
it's words that I remember.

The emotional pain of name calling hurts and does more damage to you then any physical abuse can do. The scars and bruises from physical abuse go away. But the emotional abuse suffred from verbal abuse haunts women anyway a lot worse then the physical can. As for us men we're usually not very emotional with certain things. Although at times our pride can be bruised slightly.

Names can hurt just as bad as sticks and stones, you just can't see the damage.

yes names hurt you when said by someone you have not respect for or someone you could easily beat up. they hurt even more when you are more of a failure than you can handle. what hurts is that you cannot justify or accept what is being said to you, and you may suffer from improper thinking which could lead to losing your balance to striking the source or other object or you might overload and suffer from a stroke or heart attack.
but words dont hurt you as much if you have something you want to do that is most formost in your mind. words hurt more when you have little to do and little respect for the person saying them/ :)

I think sometimes more. The bruises on the outside wear off after time . But the scars within take much longer to heal if they even do :(

Sticks and stones break bones and leave bruises
names bruise you inside but they don't break you.
