Pop music always tells the story. I hate pop, but it's a good way to tell what a generation is feeling. Like the 80's, for example. The 70's were over and people who had watched others fight the government over Viet Nam etc,,,had grown up a bit and were writing music. It was care free music that was mostly about having fun. It slowly got more serious over time again. Now, we are slowly heading back to the 80's . But I don't know that the music will ever be so care free again.
I was born in '76. Soooooo, I 'm just guessing about all this..
I prefer jazz etc...

Les Cowboys Fringants such as with their song Plus rien http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2D8jOzG7NM
They relate stories of what just happened about good people and things that will probably arrive during the coming years. Plus rien tells the story of a little boy who's the last one to die after the planet was polluted enough that even the flies started to die. Plus rien means nothing left. One of their story is about an immigrant who helped the homeless and how she must have regain her wings once she died. The song is called La reine (The Queen).

Alternative, It explains the rough roads we are taking in life. Some are good and some not so good. Some lead you to safety some lead you to danger. Alternative is my favorite music to listen too.

Country music. Because you can understand the lyrics better and they tend to sing more about current issues.
