I used to live up North on east coast. So I don't know much about sw Florida. Can veggie plants be grown sucessfully outdoors (say like in Cape Coral), or should they be done in large pots and kept by windows under shelter? Would too many bugs or the bad winds or downpours destroy the veggie plants if they were done outdoors? I don't want to look like an idiot doing vegetable plants outdoors around here if it really is'nt possible to keep them alive well out there. Vegetables like: tomatoes, peppers, yellow squash and eggplant.

You're in gardening heaven in SW Florida! Everything will grow there. You just have to scrap everything you learned about gardening up north. Forget about that last frost date in May, start planting in Jan and Feb. Your local garden centers will have the right plants at the right time. Although, you should check the tags and make sure they come from a nursery in Florida. Plants shipped from out of state may not always be the best variety for Florida.

Check with the local county extension office. They all have great information on what and when to plant and most are really helpful to the Northeners gardening for the first time.

Most, but not all, Florida soil needs help. If you've got a lot of sand, you're going to need to add some peat or other product to help hold water. Again, this is something the County office can help with.

And if you're going to work in the garden in the summer, protect yourself from sunstroke, heat exhaustion and skin cancer.

Good luck. I envy you. After gardening in SW Florida for 25 years, family circumstances necessitated my returning to the north.
