Get familiar with the T, Boston's train system which runs throughout the city. Here's the subway map:
http://mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/
Get really acquainted with it. It runs everywhere around Boston. You can get the Charlie T card, which is the admission and there's an attendant there. The T also has a bus system but I don't like it. Also, if you do use either the bus or train, don't sit where you sleep. It's public transportation so you don't know whose been sitting where, and the T just barely maintains the place to a minimum. Case in point, I was on a train heading home once and I refused to sit in a seat vacated by a lunatic because of the lingering odor of someone who just did a #2 (and not the kind where you flush). Very gross.
But you can also walk. Boston's a small enough city that you can find anything. Be careful when crosswalking, in Boston, we aren't kind drivers and I think the cabbies leave their morals at home when they drive.
Places to hit up:
Faneuil Hall - Lots to shop and eat at, and it's right by Government Center and Downtown Crossing.
Downtown Crossing - Lots of commercial shopping in the likes of Macy's, H&M and Borders Books. Shuts down early on nights though since it's not residential.
Copley Center - An expensive shopping mall but still neat to walk through.
Newbury Street - An even more expensive place to shop, but also neat to walk through.
Boston Common - Great weather = Great Day. Cold weather = Crappy Day. Fantastic to walk through and bum around.
North End - Good old fashioned Italian food with the extra pounds to regret later.
Cambridge, MA - Next to Boston and host to Harvard Square, itself host to Harvard University with lots of neat places to shop, eat or look at.
Boston's full of a lot of hot bars, restaurants and clubs. I would seriously recommend not driving because parking is expensive, the drivers are rude and it just sucks having to haul around. But if you want to escape the city for a day, there are other places to check out besides the city.

Well, but a Charlie card for the T so you can travel easily around the city. Boston is also a great city for walking. Try to get in some historical sites, but also some extra fun things. Definitely tour Fenway Park. Must walk around Fanueil Hall and the North End for some great food! The weather should be great, but wear layers in case it gets cold or rainy!
