i was happily doing volumetric analysis in my chemistry practical, but to my horror, i took in a bit of mohr salt while taking it with the pipette. the thing tasted terrible, but that isn't the thing that is bothering me. the thing that is bothering me is that it left a strange sticky and very icky feeling in my teeth. can anyone tell me the reason for this, 'coz its been puzzling me for weeks now.

This must be your mouth's response to the iron content of the salt. I'm sure that commercial iron tablets must taste as bad!

As you might be aware,Ammonium sulfate, (NH4)2SO4, sometimes known as Mohr's Salt, is a chemical compound commonly used as a fertilizer. Ammonium sulfate is quite acidic and will lower the pH balance.Ammonium sulfate contains 21% nitrogen as ammonia and 18% sulfur as sulfate.Ammonium sulfate is highly hygroscopic and spontaneously absorbs water. It is used largely as an artificial fertilizer for alkaline soils. In the soil the sulfate ion is released and forms sulfuric acid, lowering the pH balance .That might account for the strange taste you experienced.
