6x² - 5x - 6 = 0

The middle term is - 5x

Find the sum of the middle term

Multiply the first term 6 times the last term 6 equald 36 and factor

factors of 36 =

1 x 36
2 x 18
3 x 12
4 x 9. . .<=. .use these factors
6 x 6

+ 4 and - 9 satisfy the sum of the middle term

insert + 4x and - 9x into the equation

6x² - 5x - 6 = 0

6x² + 4x = 9x - 6 = 0

2x(3x + 2) - 3(3x + 2) = 0

(2x - 3)(3x + 2) = 0

- - - - - - - - -s-

You can't really show too much work, the most you can show your teacher is the "guess & check"/'trial' method

6x^2 - 5x - 6
(2x - 3)(3x + 2)

8x^2 - 6x - 8
2(4x^2 - 3x - 4)
and then it can't be factored any further, unless you use the quadratic formula

(2x-3)(3x+2) 2x-3=0 2x=3 x=3/2 3x+2=0 3x=-2 x= -2/3
x=3/2 or -2/3

6 +- sqrt 36 - (-256) all divided by 16
x= 3/8 +/- 3 ( sqrt 2)/16

6x^2 - 5x -6 = (3x+2)(2x-3)

8x^2 - 6x -8 = 2(4x^2 - 3x - 4)

1. formula is [-b +- sqrt(b^2 -4ac)]/2a
a = 6
b = -5
c = -6

[5 +- sqrt(25 +144) ] / (12)
(5 +- 13) / 12
x = 18/12 or x= -8/12
x = 1.5 or x =-2/3

1. formula is [-b +- sqrt(b^2 -4ac)]/2a
Factor out a 2 first
a = 4
b = -3
c = -4

[3 +- sqrt(9 +64) ] / (8)
(3 +- sqrt73) / 8
x = (3 + sqrt 73)/8 or x= (3 - sqrt 73)/8
