My boss's wife called me at my desk today and ask me for my certificates as supporting documents for my resume. Ive been working there for slightly over 2 weeks now. I have to pass her the certs on Monday. It seems like she s thoroughly doing her checking and Im scared she ll ask for my appointment letter with previous employers coz I aint have any! All the previous companies I worked for are small scale and very very dishonest bosses. Needless to say to stand up for my rights (they didnt pay full salary), I got into their bad books. This is the first time I got a fantastic job and a promise for increament once Ive been confirmed (1-2mths time). I love my job and now Im scared she ll ask for proof of employment in the past now. FYI, I might have exaggerated in my resume abt my job scope of previous employment (doesnt anyone when it comes to resume??). The last thing I want is for her to call my ex bosses for verification. What shd I tell her? Does she has a right to fire me?

I was dishonest in sense that I exaggerated, or actually to put it simply, rephrase nicely my job scope. Im not too concern about that, coz they were seriously just mere good rephrasing of my job descriptions. Im actually scared of not having a single appointment letter from past employers whom I actually woked for. I didnt quit my previous job on a good note. So Im afraid she ll do some calling. Honestly speakin, aside from me standing up for my own rights and telling the boss off, when it comes to work, Ive been known to be good at it. Sorry for being long winded, it just happened today, you can imagine how stressful I am now. Btw Im 25, and I was hoping my current job will be the start of a good career for me... sigh.

Thank you so much guys for your advice. I truly appreciate it. Yeah looks like Im doomed. No, I did not lie about my qualifications, I have my educational certs no worries. Its just proof of past employment Im worried about. I didnt lie about my employers nor companies Ive worked for.

And to smart ar*es I seriously dont care if you think my english is bad, atrocious or whatever. Sorry its really annoying me, I just cant think straight now and I cant be bothered to recheck what Ive typed! I just want advice on my situation, not some english lessons. Thanks again.

Oh My God. I can finally think clearly now! I dont know, for some strange reason, I suddenly think that my situation isnt that bad! Ok ok I know more than 90% of the answers here dont really reflect positively on my situation but somehow the more I think about it, the more trivial this situation really is. Damn you guys probably gonna think Im nuts. Know what? Heck care. Im gonna pass my educational certs to her and if she ask for appointment letter, I ll tell her I have none and offer her the phone number of the past companies Ive worked for. Ive never lied about my educational qualifications, my previous companies nor bosses. I merely exaggerate on my job scope. And yes, Im smiling again and getting my humour back. So my english really sucks here.. lol.. God I feel good again. Im just waiting for few hours to pass before I can vote the best answer. Thanks alot guys! :D

You don't say where you live. If you're in the US, most states are what's called employment at will, which means you can be fired for any or no reason as long as the reason doesn't violate the law (you can't be fired because of your race or gender, for example).

If your resume wasn't true, and she checks, you'll probably be fired. But maybe she won't ask for any more than she already has - as long as you have the documents she asked for, you might be OK. It's not uncommon to exaggerate on a resume, but isn't a good idea - and no, "everybody" doesn't.

I don't know what you mean by certificates. If she wants confirmation of employment, you could present your past W2s, I guess. Or, if you are in another country than US, whatever supporting documentation you get to prove your pay. You might tell her that you disagreed with some questionable business practices of one or two of your previous employers so you feel sure you could not get these documents she is asking for. And, then say you know that you can be the good employee she wants you to be so would she consider letting you prove yourself -- suggest that she will see for herself within the next 4 weeks.

Yeah, sad that you felt it necessary to lie. You may consider using your time after work to look for another job. And, no more lying. Don't tell them what you said up there about your past employers, just that you couldn't agree with some business practices you considered questionable, so you feel sure you wouldn't get a good reference from them. And then go on to tell them what a good employee you are sure you can be.

The company has every right to fire you. You lied about documentation and your qualifications for the job.
I would start packing now....'cause you're headed for the door.
You should be honest on your resume/application. And if you do get an interview, let the employer know that while your experince is limited, you're a quick learner.

If the cars and house are paid off that is a lot of extra stress your dad won't have to worry about, plus not having to worry about his employees. I hope the new job works out for him. The best thing you can do is help out a lot around the house so that he won't have to and if you have younger siblings try not to argue too much with them or try to play peacemaker between them when they start quarreling as that stuff tends to stress out your parents when they are already feeling pressure. Other than that just do the best you can in school. Behave as you would want your kids to if you had any and were under the kind of stress your dad is right now. He will appreciate your help and so will your mom.

If you lied (or exaggerated) on your resume then yes, she can fire you. If she asks for previous employment information then try being honest with her. If you are too scared to be honest then she will check it out on her own and see what is going on and she might not be too happy with what she finds then you probably will get fired. My advice is to be honest from the beginning I have never lied on a resume and I have gotten jobs just fine.

Depending on where you live, your employer should be able to have a background check done and this information would all come up. Your former employers would be listed on there- thus backing up your employment record. Typically, most employers will do their checking before someone is hired. If you have been honest and you have your certificates you should be fine.

Good Luck.

I don't understand why your boss' wife is involved with this. Most of those things should have been completed or handled before you were hired. If she is not apart of the company I wouldn't worry about it...

Now if she continues to badger you about past employment I would tell her that your former bosses were unethical in accounting practices and you feel that it was in your best interest to leave. Technically if you don't give her the right or approval to contact your former employer she can not and not use it against you.

First of all your grammar isnt all that good so I hope that this is due to your typing and not your English skills. If you lied and she is checking you will be found out most likely. It is ok to embellish a little but downright lying is not acceptable and this is the reason why. Now the only thing that you can do is try to explain the situation to her and hope that your performance will speak for itself. You think that she would have done the checking before you were hired. She does have ground to fire you for lying if she wants to.

If you have been dishonest, yes she has the right to fire you. I am sorry but employers like to feel they can trust those they hire. You should be totally honest with her as you are with this question. She may be understanding if you tell her how happy you are in your position with them.
