Before the start of the world cup organizers have decided which teams would enter the super 8 s. They have given the following order according to the performances of teams at that time.
A1 AUSTRALIA
A2 SOUTH AFRICA
B1 SRI LANKA
B2 INDIA
C1 NEW ZEALAND
C2 ENGLAND
D1 PAKISTAN
D2 WEST INDIES.
After the two major surprises in the tournament,Ireland took Pakistan's place while Bangladesh took India's place.
Thats how Ireland took D1.

In the Groups, Pakistan was placed as D1 and West Indies as D2. The same group level will be continued in Super 8 also. Hence though West Indies were top in Group D, they maintained their Group position as D2. Since Pakistan who were D1 got defeated by Ireland and Ireland qualified to Super 8, they became D1. Even if Zimbawe would have come to Super 8, they would have D1

the d1 and d2 is decided on the current rankings of the teams before the wc.Pakistani's were supposed to top group d according to the rankings,and since they got beatten by ireland ,ire took their place which follows the rules.
