I have to wonder with as many people these days that act like Jimmy Carter was a great President when they weren't old enough to experience what it was like during his administration.

I also agree with the majority of your answers...most of the teachers are presenting a slanted view of the past. In their defense, they are handed a slanted view as well.
We've all heard stories from soldiers that are "over there", and see a totally different picture than the media is feeding us.
I've heard it said that most in the media are liberal left-wing...IF that is so, is it any surprise that they are distorting reality to support whatever agenda they are currently in favor of??!!

The history books that History teachers use are research material that has been previously gathered by an individual and collected from various different perspectives and ideas, about what has 'occurred' during a particular time or era. This could differ from author to author, depending on whose perspective they went with and chose to highlight.
Of course then there is lots to consider, what are the primary and secondary sources? How many? where were they sourced from, how reliable. At secondary school, you are told of an occurance, say a battle, and a date and generally why. If you decide to go further with the subject, then an opportunity would be there to say....Such a person said this.......but such a person said that. All you can do is gather as much information as you can, to base your own personal view and opinion. Good question! I hope that this has helped a little.

What was so bad about Carter? People say they want a religious president and then they bad-mouth Carter. At least he was moral, which is quite a turn from what we see today. He was and is a caring individual that was put in a bad light by the events of the time. Yes, I voted for Carter so don't give me that old enough bit. After him we got Reagen who led the systematic destruction of the middle class. And compared to our present leadership (?) I would be glad to have Carter back!

Everything we are taught in history is slanted. Just by omitting details, we make the victors out to be saints, and the losers to be devils. How many of us learned about the property seizure and internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII ?A lot of schools still don't talk about the Trail of Tears. And if you mention the US govts role in destabilizing the gov ts of countries like the Congo, you get a blank stare.

You don't learn history in high school, you have to go out and educate yourself afterwords.

Not just recent decades but American history in general. I was appalled by how little American history is taught in school when my kids went. And it seems like most of it is how evil America was to the Indians.

Lord knows America has it's share of shameful behavior but it has to be looked at in context. You may be appalled that women were not allowed to vote but in that time period that was pretty much the accepted way throughout the world. Do you think America is the only country that was rough on the more primitive indigenous people? Were we the only participant in the slave trade?

We have come very far. You cannot look at historical events with the context of today. Opinions are way different today and will be way different in the future. In fact a few generations from now they will look back at us and think we were primitive in our opinions.

I agree with the 1st answer. History teachers and other teachers push their views on the students. If you disagree sometimes you pay with bad grades.

Modern history is his ghostly stories of failures and horrors of the past created with ghostly and deadly words by past dirty old men to be forgotten with time to collect dust at the top and highest shelves out of reach in planet of apes.
Success comes from living words of our creator in the books of records such as Encyclopaedias to be remember in time in planet of apes.
Luke 9.60
Ever wonder who were the grave diggers with all the dead Mummy creaking and rattling with skeleton of skull and bones all risen from the graveyards in scaring the hell and living daylights in making a mess and misery out of living human kind in own backyards with living examples of the mess in Iraq in planet of apes?
Ever wonder who were the bunch of educated idiots making a mess in own backyards in planet of apes?
