That honor goes to the rare 1930 Proof Penny, one which was sold back in 2005 for a record A$620,000(approx. US$517,345), making it the most expensive Australian coin and also the most expensive copper coin in the world todate. There were only six 1930 proof pennies ever struck, where three pieces currently reside in public institutions and the others are in the hands of private collectors. Other notable Australian rarities include the unique Ferdinand VI Pillar holey dollar, Ferdinand VII Hannibal Head holey dollar, Adelaide 1852 £1 and £5 gold coins, and the 1853 & 1856 Pattern Half and One Sovereigns, but the individual values for these are still less than half of the Proof 1930 and with no recent high profile transactions recorded.

The Holey Dollars from the pre-Commonwealth are worth at least $20,000 and up. I would expect the up, would be more realistic. One type sold for $50,000 American dollars in 1988. So it is probably worth 2 or 3 hundred thousand by now. As for the Commonwealth I expect the 1855 Half Sovereign at well over $100,000 maybe the big one for modern times. There are a lot of proof coins from Australia that are rare and command high prices but not as much as the 1/2 Sovereign. Hope I have helped some here.
