Is this possible and if so how do I do it without killing the plant off?

Pampas grass is very tough to kill. You'll need a machete or sharpened spade to cut through the base of the plant and roots. It might be a good idea to whack all of the foliage down to inches above the ground, easier to handle.

Always handle the leaves from the bottom to the top, the reverse will result in painful cuts from the edges of the leaves.

Once you've successfully removed a portion for transplanting, give the parent plant and new transplant a good drink of root stimulator (Fertilome makes an excellent product) to reduce shock to both plants.

good luck
