I am a huge fan of both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. I love their many collaborations and the film was good, entertaining and fresh. Yes, a little dark, but funny. However, I think the original is better overall.
Gene Wilder is great and I've loved this movie since I saw it the first time.

That is a tough one, Ive got both and I really love them. I dont think you can beat the Gene Wilder Version though as it's a classic but then I think Johnny Depp Play's a fab pay in the new one. Quite off the wall.
Think I'm gonna go with the new version.

The original was by far the best...It may not have followed the book as closley and didn't have that darkness (except the boat to hell) the arthor had intended.
But it is a classic and Gene wilder is much better in the role as Willie wonka than Johnny Depp .

Many will say that they are both equally enjoyable and disturbing in their own ways. I, however, being an avid movie fan during the 70's, have seen Gene Wilder's version the most and really enjoy it the most because it's a more balanced film than Depp's version. IMHO.

I like them both. Each of them has something memorable in them.
It's interesting that everybody liked the original better. I had read an article somewhere that mentioned that Roald Dahl absolutely hated that version of his book-made-movie and hated Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. In fact, he hated it so much that he retained the rights for the sequel. He liked the newer one much better. Or so I heard. It kept with the book better.

I prefer the original with Gene Wilder, Depp was a little ' dark' in his portrayal.
