Its the sending unit which is part of the module which is in turn part of the pump in the gas tank. These have been a problem item for GM which prompted them to switch suppliers for their fuel pumps about a year ago.

The whole unit would have to be replaced to correct it. Get the new Bosch replacement part, not the Delco.

The sending unit for the gas gauge is part of the fuel pump assembly, sometimes Chevy sells them separately but most times you have to buy a new fuel pump. You have to remove the gas tank, open the round hole on top to lift out the pump, its a lot of work. Be very careful not to cause a spark dragging tank on concrete. My gas gauge has been broken for 2 years, I just reset the trip odometer and refill every 250 miles. Good Luck

If it was completely dead it could be the wire or the gauge, but if the gauge moves at all, it's going to be the sender.
