I got a message that said "Remote user is browsing your library. Connection is closed by remote peer." Someone recommended I wipe my harddrive, should I? Should I worry? Could my next door neighbor be browsing my library?

You need a firewall. And scan your PC against spyware with Spybot Search And Destroy.

Chill winston - im guessing you were in some media application at the time? if you were on a work network and someone else was browsing your library then i shouldnt worry about it as i doubt it was malicious if you were at home and nobody else was meant to be on your network when it happened then i suggest you beef up your network security - if your on wireless then use a WEP/WPA Key to protect the network (this will stop people joining it and thus stop them accessing your stuff), if your using a hardwired connection then it would seem someone else is physically plugged into your network. You may want to disable the remote browse option in whichever media app you were using. It is also probably worth running a virus scan and anti spy scan of your whole system - if this comes back clean then dont worry a firewall is also worth employing. You dont need to wipe your hard drive whoever told you this is a muppet and should not be listened to.

Wiping the HDD is the same as Re-Formatting and reinstalling your programs. Many will refer to this as doing a clean install. You need your OS (Windows XP or whatever) some computers come with Recovery Discs (Floppies and CDs) and instructions. Some computers such as HP have what called a Partition. A partition makes you ONE HDD look like TWO. It may some in Windows Explorer as C: and F:/E:.
The partition has the original Backup of your computer and you can fix things this way in most cases. Hopefully you have the Instructions or you can find them on the computer. When you figure out how to do this and people here can help, be sure to disconnect from the Internet before you start. Unplug the cable or disconnect your Wireless/DSL Router.

have you still kept your remote desktop connection enabled or kept upnp connection enabled..if you have those with wireless lan connection then it's a reason to worry..i have never heard that word like "wipping a hard drive"..it's not a computer-maintanance related word..if your hard drive is wipped or deleted then you will lose all info of your system..it's may be sent as a joke or harasement..you know that..please contact a pc expert and diagnose for any potential intrusion,hacking,tracking,illegal-control of your system to be confirmed..it's difficult to tell from here...
that's all from me
good luck.

if your a road runner user you can get a free spyware/virusprotection from them and windows usually comes with a couple of firewalls all on its own

....thats if you dont own a mac, in that case your basically screwed, trash it and get a real computer
