RSVP is abbreviation for the french phrase (or fronch froz):
"respondez s'il vous plait"
pronounced: "re-spawn-day-sill-voo-play"
literal translation would be "you respond, if it you please"
note that the verb form ending in "ez", (ie "respondez") implies either a second person plural listener or a polite formality of address to a second person singular listener.
also note that word order in french does not have the same logic as word order in english. (not to imply that english is "more logical". from an objective point of view, all grammatical word order in any language is essentially random, and therefore each language has its own unique inherent logic to its word ordering)
therefore, less literal but more accurate translations might be: "respond, if it pleases you", "respond, if you please" or simply "please respond"
the french could simply say "respondez" to much the same effect, but without the gentler softening words "if you please" the effect is much more severe, taking on a grammatical case known as the imperative, which can be a bit rude. simply saying "respondez" could be interpreted as "answer me"(!)
also note that the other person who touted the "correct spelling of the phrase" did not spell the phrase correctly, leaving the "s" out of respondez. (mon dieu! quelle dommage!) perhaps she will notice this and correct it later, but as i write this, the irony and conceit is very funny. she is correct as to the need for the french accents at the places she indicates, and my respect and admiration goes out to those who answered in the correct font.

The term R.S.V.P. comes from the French expression "répondez s'il vous plaît", meaning "please respond". If R.S.V.P. is written on an invitation it means the invited guest must tell the host whether or not they plan to attend the party. It does not mean to respond only if you're coming, and it does not mean respond only if you're not coming (the expression "regrets only" is reserved for that instance). It means the host needs a definite head count for the planned event, and needs it by the date specified on the invitation.

R.S.V.P. It comes from the French words," repondez Sil vous plait". I'm sorry I don't have a French font so I can't add the French accents. It means please respond or please reply. It is used so that somebody running some sort of function will have a good idea of which invited guests will arrive.
