a dr in chicago at Northwestern Memorial Hosp. told me I had "stiffening of the heart" in a letter in BLACK AND WHITE. Now after 2 seperate echocardiogram and stress tests by a cardiologist at the same hospital it has been proven my heart is 100 % normal but the hospital has absolutely no empathy or compassion towards me and the fear I had for several days that I was very ill before the cardiologist told me I was ok. The hospital says I misinterpreted the DR's misdiagnosis I have it in a LETTER the DOCTOR MISINTERPRETED THE TESTS and scared the hell out of me for a weekend and 3 days.

If I make a mistake, I apologize and move on. If a doctor does he/she is some screw up and should lose their license. One of the best sayings is "get a second or third opinion." Should you have been released and had a heart attack, their liability is even worse. Stress can also make your heart respond differently on tests.

Unfortunately, this is America. On the bright side, we do have great health care compared to other Countries. Doctors are human and will make mistakes. The problem we run into , is that (for example) if a doctor treats your cold as a virus and not an infection; noone sues over that. Now you were scared for several days, sure you could sue, but you'd probably get a heart problem with all the money and details being spent. It's one of those things that you may just have to accept. Of course you can switch doctors, or you can choose to count your blessings.

My father was told (just 3 weeks ago) that he had lung cancer. Omg, what our family went through, and he then learned that he does not. Yes, there is some anger on all of our parts, but the better choice for less stress is we are sooo thankful for the outcome, even though it was stressful to get there. Maybe the lesson here is not to be bitter, but to be happy being what could have been.

But you have every right to be pissed off. But then move on.

:-)

Unfortunate but medicine is an imprecise field. Hospital has to have this reviewed by quality assurance regardless due to wrong diagnosis. It is required as part of accreditation. You can initiate this action by calling the hospital and speaking with the Quality Improvement Director or even administration. As a last resort, you could file a complaint with the accrediting body which is www.jointcommission.org

hi, it is scary when you think you could be really ill. however,
you could see it like this, actually what your doctor gave you was his diagnosis. from the symptoms you had and described to him. right?
well if he then sent you for tests to really" see" what was wrong, confirming or disproving his diagnosis...well, actually he did the right thing.( the latin for dia gnosis is something like....a good guesser!)
so an even better guesser! called a specialist/cardioligist. was called to give his opinion and it differed..and you are soo lucky it was a good thing you found out! :-) your heart is fine! thats great!
now ask -well doctor, what could have given me the discomfort that brought me to you? what else can i suspect for these symptoms.. ie maybe you have an ulcer? do you suffer anxiety attacks, take medications, do you know the side effects ? ALL not just the common ones.
vioxx caused heart attacks. killed people and was withdrawn! celebrex is related for instance!!
every woman goes through this when they get a pap smear and abnormal cells are found, yearly or 2 yearly.. 3 days, then maybe a recall and re test.. you have to learn to cope!
if you had been told you were fine! and sent home and then Had!! a heart attack, fine- be very upset ,with good cause then! but youre only raising your blood pressure and stress levels for no good purpose here. sorry. be thankful for your life and call the worrying a good reality check!
if you had been really ill, you know, you cope with it. you take responsibility to find out for yourself , what you have , and how to get by, day by day. and what your options are. so do it now, before you are ill. then maybe you,ll live for longer (and better)

Oh yea they will stick up for each other, you prob have to go over the hospital's head on that one. When my second son was born, he had a hereditary birth defect, and had to be in the nicu at strong hospital. It required him to have surgery. But because of the fact it is a rare birth defect, they found it necessary to do other tests to be safe, I was like OK, better to be safe. The next day They came to me, mind you... I just had him the day before, He was shipped to another hospital, of course I left when they moved him, not caring that I had just given birth, I just wanted too be there for my son. Well the nurse came too me and said ...." well you know there is another problem........ and it's serious!" I all most hit the floor!... "well he's missing one of his valves in his heart, and we don't know if he's going to make it".... weeks later after worrying and praying for my son...... Found out it wasn't true, and there is actually nothing wrong with my sons heart. To make it worse, the nurse when she told me, wasn't the least bit compassionate! She was cold and inconsiderate! Do you think the hospital cared? Nope. He's 10 years old now doing fine..... but imagine thinking your baby is going to die, because he was miss diagnosed. You should definitely go over their head and do something about this. They don't realize what they do to people when they do that!!! What if they told someone that they had a fatal disease, then the person kills them self..... then oh yea.... we made a mistake... sorry.

I think you should look into filing a malpractice suit of your own
because even tho the misdiagnosis didn't affect your physical health, it sure as he** affected your mental/emotional health. Just call a lawyer for advice and see what they say.

It's called CYA (cover your a**) and hospitals do it all the time. With so many malpractice suits and high insurance rates it has become a necessary evil I suppose.
