As long as the America people view Nationhood as the priority over native State, there will not be another civil war. Although regional control of the nations economy was the cause, and State's rights and much later slavery were tabled as the topics to raise public passion, it was loyalty to the Native State that decided in most cases who fought where, and therefore what their politics were. This was the divisive fuel. One only needs to read the memoirs of the military leaders on both sides to substantiate this. Later examples of Nationhood over state is the social revolution of the sixties, and more recently both gulf conflicts. The question was asked, "what should we as a Nation do"

Some already have speculated that such an event could happen, as to wide spread rumors of base closings in the rural south. But that is all gossip really. Americans have lost the stomach for war and are not so easily motivated to take up arms. It would have to be a big, huge, enormous crack in the soft pampered lifestyle we enjoy as a country. I think in all odds, it is more likely we have a close war with another country on our soil before civil war. Of course, the South could rise again...but football pretty much eases that out.

The most likely cause of civil unrest and maybe a civil war is the movement supporting the creating of a Hispanic country out of the Southwestern United States.

However, remote, any formal attempt to carry to carry through with this movement will cause civil unrest unseen since the civil war.

No, because the criteria for it have changed/ If a region were to break off it would be California or the far west and there is no real movement to have this happen. In 1860 the USA was made up of states with rights, today states have few rights, it's all about the Federal government. That's one of the things the Civil War changed.

Civil war, no...Civil strife and rioting...yes

We will never have another all out war that we fight ourselves like the first civil war. There may be a time when there is enough civil strife that the major cities, for all practical purposes, will be in a martial law setting. This may come from internal matters within our society or even attacks on our cities from other countries or terrorists.

If the late 60s didn't precipitate another civil war, I don't think we're going to head into one again. That was the most unsettling time in our history, moreso than the 1850s. The fact that we worked it out and came out stronger speaks well of our country.

There is no burning question like slavery anymore that would be capable of precipitating another civil war.
