Depends on what that monk does with his time, and what the construction worker does when he's not working. Genius monks have made great contributions to culture and science (Dom Perignon comes to mind).

Oh, interesting!
We cannot assume that the genius monk knows God, the Universe, Source, Self (whatever name you call It) any better or intimately than the construction worker.
The monk may live a noble life, but they may harbor anger or hate and is living in denial through some justification born of his/her ego.
The construction worker may not live an ideal lifestyle to an outsider's perspective, but they may enjoy the work because they love helping people with their housing issues or they may have left school to support their family. It can be inaccurate to assume because of appearances. This construction worker may be the most loving person who truly knows God.
The person who has compassion and love for the Universe would be the one you'd think would be my answer...BUT! No one can presume to know what greater good is being served by either of these person's actions, reactions or creations.
Besides, we're all in this together.

An uneducated construction worker! He has worked with people..He's in touch with the world and every day life...he may not have as much knowledge as a genius monk...but what he does have is experience.hes an ordinary person who goes through as much as other people do! Hes able to relate.

Mankind does not need help from individuals, but individuals can enjoy their lives more in a time where there exist more people with similar desires. That kind of leaves it up in the air, doesn`t it? There are obviously more construction workers but the monk is more likely to be consciously holding fewer negative emotions.
Let`s call it a tie. Cheers!

Both the monk and the construction worker are spiritual beings having a human experience. I believe we are all suspended in something that we call "spirit." Because the monk chooses to fully develop his connection to spirit and operate within the spiritual realm to a degree the construction worker cannot, due to his chosen profession, I believe the monk is helping mankind more. Why? Through his spiritual connection.
We are all suspended in spirit. This means that you cannot do something, think something or become something that does not affect me in some way, shape or form. Remember Dr. King, "Injustice ANYWHERE is a threat to justice EVERYWHERE."
The monk, having developed his ability to affect the spiritual realm is affecting us to a greater degree than an "unconscious" construction worker.

Penny is right, the monk, as long as he is in seclusion, he can't help anyone, no matter how smart he is. On the other hand, the construction worker can learn, and is able to share that knowledge to the world.

both have the potential to make great contributions to the world. the monk may write a book that will help people find a reason to live when they are desperate. the construction worker may be helping build a home for the needy. either way, both men are helping people have better lives.

They both are equal in fulfilling their karmic position in the universe. While the monk does more for the universal consciousness by purifying his own thoughts, the construction worker is also playing a role as an individual as well.
