There are a variety of sources to learn about new subjects. Truthfully i don't know very much about PR in particular. Your question interests me because i am about to embark on a bit of a historical journey of my own and well I have a formula. Go to Wikipedia and read all the biased information they have. That way you'll have a frame of reference. Write down the names of important character and if possible important historians. Make note of a few important events and actors, the Spanish-American War or the communist party. Then go to your public library and find where the clusters of PR history are. Pick up every title that interests you and then choose the best books along the lines of what you are interested in and how much effort you are willing to put in. I am about to do the same for the Ottoman Empire, i think.
After you have done the more serious research, pick up a copy of the Rum Diary by Hunter S Thompson. It's a funny chronicle of San Juan in the 1950's from the perspective of an inebriated journalist. And never forget to read all the primary sources you can get your hands on. If you find something interesting, post the link in the details so that i can check it out. Latin American history is my passion.
Anyhow, good luck.

Books, a library, the Internet, and of course there are always college classes that teach it. One question you might want to ask yourself, what Hispanic History is it that you want to learn? The history of Spain? Of Mexico? Of Brazil? of what area?
