With!

And the reverse is also true!

We know these days that music actually makes the learning of math and science come easier, but whether or not you should listen to it while you are doing the math probably depends on the individual. I know some people that would find it really distracting, but others, including me, could never have done any homework without music in the background.

My suggestion is to try it both ways and see what works better for you.

Without music, although music shouldn't be a problem is you understand the math well

I find doing math work with some kind of classical music in the background helps keep my mind from wandering.

However, music with words I find too distracting.

Stuff like instrumental movie sound tracks are great to study to (John Williams is great)

From a women's magazine:
"Recent research found students who took tests while listening to their favorite rock music scored higher than students who didn't listen to music. And similar studies have shown that rock music has a significant effect on cognitive performance, improving problem-solving skills."

Here's my advice -- try it one semester with, and one semester without. (When you take your tests, try and "play" the music in your head -- it'll help you remember what you studied.) Which semester gives you the better grades?

BTW, there are many studies that link learning to play music with better math skills. And also, there's the old Mozart effect. I'd say it should be OK, but you should be able to tell if you are distracted.

If you are gathering up evidence to prove to your parents that listening to music is OK while you do homework, I bet you can find plenty of studies that say it is!

It depends on the music. Some music helps you to relax, but others may distract you...
