it means "game winning". because the remainder of the inning doesn't need to be played. the players can "walk off" the field. only the winning run needs to cross home plate.
if it's a walk-off double, for instance, the guy who hit the double doesn't need to do anything except make sure that he doesn't get out. once the winning run crosses the plate, the players walk off.

If you're the home team at the end of the game or in extra innings and you score a go ahead run the game is over. You walk off the field and go home with out having to bat any more even if there are no outs. A game winning homerun/run could come at any point in the game with more innings yet to play. A 1st inning homerun would eventually be the game winning homerun in a 1-0 victory but you still have the whole game to play.

The term walk off doesn't apply just to home runs. It applies to any offensive play (including a walk or being hit by a pitch) that drives in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th or subsequent inning. A "walk off" of any type can only be accomplished by the home team.
The term walk off describes the visting team as they leave the field without being able to make a play. They simply walk off the field.

It can be the last hit of the game. It does not neccesarily have to be a home run. It can be a "walk off" double to win the game if some one scores. The easiest way to understand it is you can "walk off" the field after your team scores to win the game.

A walk off home run is one that is hit in the bottom of the inning in either a nine inning or extra inning game where the home run wins the game for the home team. The same would be true of a walk off base on balls. The winning run would be walked in in the bottom of the ninth or in an extra inning game.

A walk off homerun is a game winning homerun which only comes in the bottom of the 9th inning or a later bottom half inning.
