I woke up this morning to find one of our windows broken. It faces into our very secluded back garden, which is virtually impossible to get into. I looked for a projectile to see if someone had thrown something at it but could find nothing. I don't think it could have been a burglar because of the difficulty of getting into the garden. What could cause a double glazed window to break all by itself?

Biggest problem is age of glass window unit. Temperatures have a lot to do with it. I have had the same problem and this was due to age and south facing. You might have to replace the glass unit or even the whole window. I had to replace my window as it was over 20 years old. Have a word with a window specialist, in fact several. Hope this helps

Actually, it's probably due to the house settling. When a house settles, if it settles crooked that puts a ton of pressure on the window then it cracks. You might check the foundation just to make sure it isn't sinking anywhere. It would probably be wise to replace the whole window instead of just trying to replace the glass.

The other possibility is that the window wasn't installed properly or it's just a bad quality window.

How old is the window? I had a new window pane break because of a stress fracture. It did not show up until the weather got hot. Pella replaced the window at no charge.

If the frame is too tight or there is a fault in the glass, it could crack on its own.
