i would check the brake pads to see how much pad is on them and also check the roters to see if they are warped this problem also could be your abs kicking on if you are hitting the brakes really hard to stop. if the pads and roters are bad replace them and this should take care of the problem.

Do you feel any vibration movement in tour steering wheel as you slow down? If so the bumping you may be hearing can be caused by a brake rotor or rotors slightly warped This is often the case if the car is not driven an a day to day basis or has been stored over the winter.

I just finished a Cadillac brake job where the floater (slider) pins on the caliper bracket were frozen. One slider pin is exposed and may be removed easily.The other floater pin has no external bolt so the caliper needs to be removed from the car and twisted back and forth to remove the caliper.

You did not tell us the year of your car. I firmly believe you should consider having the items above checked.
