Have two offers. One is with a huge district further away from my home. The pay is a little less but I really liked the staff and could picture myself working there. The kids are very needy though, but it would be rewarding.
The other one is my home district ..the pay is a bit better, but the principal is evidentally a bit controlling and it's not as positive of a place to work. however, it's less of a commute and i could work my way to a school MUCH closer to home. what do i choose?

Good for you 2 job offers!.I worked for years under a laid back principal. Those years were my best. Now we have a new principal who has changed the entire work environment; constant meetings, controlling actions, playing teachers off one another. I have gone from loving my job to being overwhelmed by it. Go to the place where you can be happy and thrive. Good luck!

Work in the one where you feel the most comfortable.

Last year I was in a district where I liked the other teachers, but the principal was very controlling and negative (always calling faculty meetings to chew us out or threaten us). I was really unhappy and stressed out.

This year I am in a different district where the principal is more laid-back. He leaves us alone to teach without trying to micromanage everything. I have more students and I have to do more work on curriculum, but I have been much happier and less stressed, even though I technically have more work this year. It is amazing how much the overall atmosphere of the school can make a difference in wanting to keep teaching.

I recommend you take the job with the staff that you like.

Of every job I've had that I really liked, the reason I liked them was because of the people I worked with. As a teacher, you actually have 2 populations of people to work with - the fellow staff and administration, and the students. If the job in the big school district has people that are that good, jump on it. One other bonus of that is that in a large district, there will be more opportunity to move up, or to work in a different school if you like.

If you are just starting out, I'd probably take the job where you feel more comfortable with the staff. On the other hand, if you are just starting out, you do not think about it much, but you may want to consider the benefits, such as medical and more importantly retirement. If you prefer to staying closer to home is it possible to transfer to another school after a year or two? Though I may have not given you much help, I hope I given you more information to consider.

Choose the one that has a staff you can picture yourself with. These are people you will need to communicate with and spend time with every day, and a rewarding experience is much more important than the money. Especially with a controlling principal. You won't have as much fun there, go with the first one!

Needy kids seem like a good cause for awhile. But they really wear you out after a few years. I would choose the school with the better behaved and scholastically interested student population. You will enjoy teaching more, and you will actually be working with kids that are going to learn from you and maybe someday change the world.

The one where you can picture yourself working. Because
you want to start out somewhere where your going to feel
comfortable. And not with an environment that is going to
be hostile or to controlled.
