My son came home and said his teacher told them that the word "stupid" should never be used to describe someone or something that they did......instead we should call them "different"....

Okay, so gambling all your grocery money away when you have kids to feed is DIFFERENT?

Geezus........ >: (

He should have told his teacher that her interpretation of the usage of the word stupid is the most "different" thing he has ever heard.

Well, Britain isn't perfect. It's got massive social problems, it's obsessed with D grade celebrities, and it's also only a stone's throw from France. Still, it does have some good points. The NHS is so much fairer than the US system where you are basically screwed if you are poor and sick. And where getting sick is a good way to become poor. No death penalty No firearms Gay marriage has been legal there for several years Fewer teenage pregnancies Fewer junkies The UK murder rate is 400% lower than the US murder rate Significantly smaller percentage of the population has been/is in prison UK human rights and civil liberties laws are much more comprehensive than the US's The UK Conservatives look like sandal wearing hippies when compared to the Republicans The BNP. The US is supposed to be so free, but you'd never be allowed to have a party like the BNP in the US. The same for the ultra liberal parties. So much more political choice in the UK. you can even have openly communist candidates standing for office without fear of state reprisals William Wilberforce, the UK baned slavery SO MUCH EARLIER than the US Black Vote. I don't think that there ever was a time in the UK that blacks were banned from voting Housing Projects. Britain provides homes for the poor while the US poor are forced to live like third world refugees From what I hear, half of Africa, Asia, the middle East and Easter Europe are queuing up in Calais to try to sneak into the UK. Mexicans only want to get into the US because it's easy (At least compared to swimming the Atlantic Ocean. If they had a land border with the UK then there'd probably be second generation citizens of Mexican descent trying to leave the US for the UK. Of course, the weather in the UK SUCKS BIG TIME. It rains like 350 days of the years.

Personally i think sensitivity is a good thing, but it can be misinterpreted ; just because i'm sensitive to diversity doesn't mean i am alwys politically correct. As Forrest Gump once said "stupid is as stupid does".For a teacher to say someone is different in place of stupid, maybe she could have told your son the personwas acting "mentally regressed" that way it makes it possible that there was a mistake made instead of the negative connotation. No wonder the imcompetency rate for teacher recertification is 40%.You had me at geez. BKTY ( i'll let you figure it out K )

I will give the teacher that calling someone stupid is not nice, but to call their actions stupid is absolutely correct! Different cannot be substituted for stupid when describing actions, as you so wonderfully pointed out.

LOL, That's a good one. You are kidding? right? The teacher sounds like a lame brain and I myself would be in the schools principle's office The teacher needs to learn before he/she can teach.

Tell your son to call the teacher 'different'. See how much she likes it then.

I will agree that the word stupid should not be used, If you're a child or talking about one, but different, just does'nt work.
I like "feeble minded" instead.
