It really depends. I just LOVE murder mystery parties. I own Dinner and a Murder Mystery Games and I used to own a murder mystery dinner theater also. I have hosted most of them on the market and have attended many theater type events. Experiences really differ depending on the type of venue and the type of murder mystery game. There are 3 different types:
The first are turn-based, where the mystery takes place in rounds and is usually played over a meal (the rounds taking place between courses). These usually include scripts to read from. This is the form that the popular boxed sets available in the shops take. Many online retailers also sell these types. They play more like a board game around a table. Some brands out there are confusing and do not make sense when the solution is read. Hopefully your party isn't one of these! There are a couple of these I played that were enjoyable. I would not call them memorable, but they were nice for a small party.
The second type are Interactive games. In addition to needing to solve the murder, each guest has other goals and objectives. There are no scripts to read. Guests have game money for bribing and blackmailing. The murder usually takes place at the party. I prefer these because the mingle format allows more intimacy between guests and lets them become a part of the mystery instead of feeling like they are just playing a game. While there is a set solution to the murder, how the guests achieve their other goals is entirely up to them. You could play the same game with the same players and each time the game would be different.
The final method is a theater style murder mystery dinner. During these you sit at your own table and actors stage everything. They will interact with the audience and you will try to solve the murder they stage. Solving the murder, with some comic entertaining along the way, is the goal of this type of venue. It is enjoyable in the sense that it requires no planning, no organizing etc... It isn't a social event like the previous 2, which require interaction among all the guests.
Hope this helps clear things up some, or did I actually just confuse you more;-)

Yes, years' ago. It formed part of our annual business development conference and was a great way to unwind and improve team building etc..
You meet the characters together and then the murder happens. If you are sitting at tables each character comes around to each table and you get to ask a few questions.
Good fun and if the wine's flowing it gets even better. Enjoy!

I went to one on a steam train. Was quite good but also slightly annoying because you had to wait for the next installment of the story to reach your compartment. They acted it out in each compartment along the train and then went back to the start to do the next bit!!!!
