I was disgusted at the way all of the major news studios handled the Virginia Tech shootings. You'd think they were HAPPY about it, the way it was splashed all over the channels, like it was the biggest news story that ever happened. Meanwhile, 171 people were killed in Iraq. Why didn't THAT get as much coverage? How did we allow this to happen? Our news media has deteriorated into a parade of flashy, hollow celebrity wannabees, feeding us pre-fabricated "info bites." I don't WANT to see pictures of the killer or hear his godawful writing samples! I'm sure the victims families don't either! Where's the news media's sensitivity?

The purpose of the news media is no longer to inform, as it was 30-40 years ago. Now their job is to sell. And they sell what they think we should buy, not what we really want to buy.
Iraq is old news to them, they will air it from time to time if nothing else is going on, but they've done so much of it that they feel it won't sell anymore. An event like the shootings really gets emotions going in the public and they will exploit that as much as humanly possible, until it doesn't sell anymore. Then they move on to the next disaster.

If it's something they can sensationalize they will. Last week it was Imus. This week it is Va Tech, a very tragic event which deserves to be handled with respect and decorum, which the media obviously can't do.
They think we want to know EVERYTHING and hear and see it over and over, but I just read the news stories online and don't bother watching the news after something like this happens.
To the media... PLEASE have some respect for the families and friends and the victims themselves. STOP your nonsense and realize we don't need every sliver of information.
The media has done this for many years... we hear all the details of celebrity marriages, breakups, adoptions as well. Please just give us relevant news, I really don't care to hear about the next child that anyone is adopting, or who is marrying whom. That stuff is meant for Entertainment Tonight, not the local or national news.
My 2 cents.

i'm a former member of the information media who hopes some day to return to what i admire, radio information. Radio is blessed and cursed with the might desire to maintain it short and to the factor. while a information tale isn't any longer new we tend to pass directly to the subsequent enormous tale. each and every now and then i wanted shall we carry on with-up extra. As to the cases sq. truck bomb tale--what if that bomb had long gone off and killed a pair hundred human beings? Oklahoma city did no longer pass away in an afternoon or 2. the cases sq. bomber tale is ongoing and merits some ongoing insurance. My best gripe with regard to the information media is extra a count of bias. I want objective reporting, which we don't get lots of those days.
