I do not have a good definition of Freemasons but I do know that they are not Catholic.
Catholics are not allowed to be Freemasons because:
+ Freemasonry promotes indifferentism, the heretical (to Christians) belief that all religions are equally legitimate attempts to explain the truth about God but that this truth will never be explained. This is incompatible with Christian faith because Christians believe that God has definitively revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, and desires that all men come to the knowledge of this truth.
+ Freemasonry's teachings and practices also result in syncretism which is the blending of different religious beliefs into a unified whole. This shown in Masonry's religious rituals, which gather men of all faiths around a common altar, and place all religious writings along side the Bible on the Masonic altar.
+ The Lodge's practice of requiring its members to swear immoral oaths is also incompatible with Christianity. These oaths require a Christian to swear on the Holy Bible that he will uphold a code of moral conduct that prefers Masons to non-Masons, and to preserve secret passwords and handshakes. Such oaths are immoral because they are trivial and not necessary. These oaths are sworn under penalties of physical torture and death (e.g., having my throat cut across, and my tongue torn out by its roots). These penalties show a lack of respect for God.

With love in Christ.

People who say that Freemason is a secret society know nothing about Freemasonry. Freemasons just like any organizations is a society with secrets. Which really means that there are things that are confidential just like our workplace, the doctor's office, and even amongst our own circle of friends. Does that make it a secret society?
And for those who claim they know about Freemasonry by watching A & E, reading books, or whatever you see on the internet, true it shows many things about Freemasons and Freemasonry but it is no where close if you actually experience being one.
You can read or hear about how great skydiving is, how nice the Grand Canyon is, how fun Disneyland is, but until you experience it, you really know nothing about it.

It's a Fraternity. I used to tease my husband all the time about it being "Boy Scouts for Big Boys". It's considered a "secret organization" though their secrets can be found in books and on TV. Many of the people who are Freemasons are Christian. I know a couple of Muslims are in my husbands lodge. It's not a religion, though you will find many people calling it that. They mainly do Charity work for their communities. And no, they are not Catholic. The RCC has condemned the Freemasons because they are such a "Secret Organization". Which is hilarious to hear people say that, because I found all kinds of info on their secrets before my husband had even joined them. We had even watched a special on A&E on it and one recently on the Discovery Channel. And I know for a fact they were showing the "Secrets" because many of the Masons I know confirmed it. =)

I am a Freemason. We are a group separate from religion. Discussions of religion are not even allowed at a lodge. I could not tell you if my mason friends are Catholic, Christian or Muslim. I also don't know if they are Republican or Democrat because political discussions are not allowed at a lodge either. I do know that they are not atheists because you must believe in a god to join, but is can be a god of any faith

Freemasons are a group of people who are otherwise known as "Friends of Police". They will have a profession to care for and yet they would act as "Friends of Police"

The freemasons are what's called a Masonic Cult. They have their own religion, and are not connected to any of the mainstrean Christian faiths (though they sprang from the Catholic church not that long ago).
Nowadays, the masons have little importance.
