For your criteria, the Mazda Miata is your best bet. There's always an older MG or Triumph but unless you're mechanically inclined, stay well away. Those vehicles have a reputation of getting you on a first name basis with everyone at your local garage very quickly. Have you ever actually driven a Miata? If not, don't be so quick to judge them. Years ago while finishing my schooling I had a job as a valet attendant and I drove everything from crappy 15 year-old Chevy's or Hyundai's to cars like brand new Porsche's, BMW's Benz', Corvette's etc. While the expensive luxury or sports car were a lot of fun to drive, I really appreciated the Miata the most. It does not have a lot of power compared to other cars but the 5-speed transmission is an absolute joy to drive. It is nimble and handles very well. Considering the price, I think it's an excellent little roadster. I think you would be doing yourself a disservice by dismissing it based solely on looks.

In the US? Do you want luxury or sportiness, or just a fun daily driver?
Luxury choices are limited- the Mercedes SLK (as previously menitoned) or CLK if you want something smaller.

More reasonably priced and a LOT higher on the fun-to-drive meter are the Mazda Miata, and BMW Z4. Both are truly well-balanced driver's cars capable of putting more powerful cars to shame.

Even further down the price ladder, and perhaps more practical in terms of price and trunk space are the Pontiac Soltice and Saturn Sky. A bit heavier than the Miata, these are comfortable cruisers that in high-sport trim have 260HP on tap and are still pretty fast.

If you want a MONSTER killer; look no further than the Corvette or the Viper, both are available as convertibles, and with up to 600HP on tap, hang on!!!

So many choices- you have to get what appeals to YOu and meets your needs. A 2-seat convertible should be an impulse buy, one that is decided as much by emotion as a real comparision of features. Try a few that appeal to you.... only one will start saying "buy me...." while you're driving it.

The most desirable droptop (in this reader's humble opinion) is a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. While the Ferrari's are gorgeous, the Lambo is just in a different class - it oozes style and generates envy, which are the two reasons people buy convertibles.

Incidentally, Jeremy Clarkson has famously said that 'the only person to look good in a convertible was Hitler'. But don't let that put you off.
