in my opinion, faith in general should be a sin.
to believe something is true, no matter how much evidence points otherwise, no matter how silly or appalling, just seems ridiculous.
"those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." ~voltaire

i am aware that not all people who have faith commit atrocities, however it does clear the way for extremists to find justification, or even a sense of obligation to do outrageous acts.

As I understand it, faith is an important part of your relationship with God because faith is an important part of _any_ relationship. Without faith, you cannot have much trust. Without trust, your relationship doesn't really go anywhere.
Obviously, if you don't have any faith, you don't believe in God in the first place, and a relationship is barred outright. The more faith you have, however, the more you can communicate and understand.

Because faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb 11:1). Faith is the currency of heaven. Faith allows you to draw on God's promises in your heavenly account.

Obviously it requires faith to believe in something that has no possibility of proof---the problem arises when some "believers" think they have the monopoly on truth--& pretend that they alone own that truth--it's a recipe for division resulting in tribalism.

In order to properly understand the meaning of faith, you need to go into the meaning of the word in Greek. If you look up the following, pisteo, pistueo, and pistis, you will find that there is a pattern of trust in action. It causes the believer to base his entire being 'in the trust of Him'. It causes the thoughts and actions of that believer to conform to an ideal. God's ideal.
ideal-
- noun
1. a conception of something in its perfection.
2. a standard of perfection or excellence.
3. a person or thing conceived as embodying such a conception or conforming to such a standard, and taken as a model for imitation: Thomas Jefferson was his ideal.
4. an ultimate object or aim of endeavor, esp. one of high or noble character: He refuses to compromise any of his ideals.

Jesus said that you need to apply yourself according to His word. The act of doing so can be defined as 'Faith'.

It is more important to have faith than it is to have a certain religion.

Faith is believing without seeing...that the Heavenly Father sent His Son to shed his blood for your sins. So that you can have everlasting life.
