theo the cat in the hat - Dont source Wikipedia, it makes you look stupid, Wikipedia is the most unreliable source of information.
Judy_t00 - Stalin is believed to have ordered the murders of upto 50 million people in his Siberian Gulags.
- Where as Mao is believed to have ordered the deaths of 70-100 million people. Get your facts straight. Al Qaeda, Ayatollah Khomenei, Adolf Hitler and Idi Amin did not mass murder nearly close to the number that Mao and Stalin did.
-Christ0nAStick - Dude, Franco and Mussolini used their religions as a way of swaying the people, these people were not christians and most probably didnt even follow the christian faith, they were probably atheists.

And Mussolini was a catholic, he contributed to war also. The atrocities that Mao and Stalin did were not out of atheism. They murdered because those people were a threat to their authority. Yes many religious died, but because they were a vocal opposition and seen as a threat, not because they were religious. Stalin and Mao were tyrants who held to philosophies of fascism, which is similar to religion in that it oppresses. Communism is a religion of the state, where the state takes the place of god. Stalin saw himself as a living god. No true atheist would have said that.

That's a good gag, trying to get atheists to defend Stalin. But the only person farther away from the average modern-day humanist atheist than Uncle Joe is Hitler.

well he didn't kill for atheism now didn't he? He killed because he was a warped man with a warped ideology. This stands seperate from him being an atheist yes/no.
On the other hand, people kill for religion all the time, see the difference? And how does any of this make the religious killing look any better? 'people on the other side do it too', is that your argument? Except that they don't pretend to be guided by a loving and just god.

mao and stalin were amateurs compared with the christians hong and yang xiuqin and their army of love in the taiping rebellion. it's funny how this is never taught in history lessons or ever mentioned. i know the response that will come back,"they were not christians if they did that". well yes they were and it was the christian ideology that inspired the slaughter of 200 million people.
atheists cannot use the "but they're not atheist" get out clause because they do not have an ideology, they just don't believe in god/gods. they are individuals not a collective group. mao and stalin were atheists but their actions were not inspired by atheism but by their interpretation of a political ideology, in much the same way as hitler and the xiuqing brothers interpreted christianity. as a matter of fact marx thought that both a belief in god and atheism were irrelevant to socialism and that religion was the opium of the people, his target was religion not god.
if you want to look up hitler's christian beliefs google positive christianity.
and here's the site about the xiuqin brothers.

mao and stalin did not order the killings, most of the people died of famine or disease due to the implementation of stupidly dogmatic economic policies. hitler and pol pot ordered killings. the british killed 22 million bengalis in the same way and a couple of million irish, (that was during the period when they were a very christian nation), their economic policies caused famines. and in the us the policy of manifest destiny led to the death of about 20 million native americans due to disease, (deliberately introduced smallpox), famiine, (due to herding them on to reserves and not feeding them) and straight forward killing. the point is no nation or creed can claim to have a clear conscience.

Hey 'tard, the loony tunes who burnt witches at Salem were Christians. I'm sure one could find many more shining examples of sadism and perversity masquerading as Christianity like for instance the Spanish Inquisition.
Or maybe you believe the people they burned at Salem really were witches.

They may have been atheist but the things they did to gain and keep power are the same things that many religious people used to gain and keep power.
George Bush? A shining example of Christian love in action?
