"Should parents be held liable for the crimes committed by their children?"

Phew, that feels better. Sorry could not help myself. This is the home school section you know.

It depends on the situation.
Rarely are things so black and white as some people might assume.
If parental neglect contributed to the delinquency (for example, parents allowing kids to roam around at night) then yes, the parent must be accountable. It is likely that the parent needs training and discipline as well.
If parental neglect did NOT contribute (a parent that has done all the right things within reason) then the parent ought not to be held liable. There certainly are parents whose kids just turn out bad for whatever reason...

So anyway, it is a judgment call, case by case, IMHO

Is this a homeschooling question?

Parents need to be told if their child commits a crime, but not held liable unless the child deliberately destroys someones property. Then the child should have to 'work out' some way to pay for it. They will never learn to understand personal responsibility if mom and dad pay for what they do with no consequences to them.

NO! My mom had all girls, and two of my sisters are the exact opposite. One was class prez and doesn't do drugs (has never even tried pot lol which is good, just usually unheard of these days), doesn't drink, never slept around, always came home on time, but still wasn't a loser lol. My other sister got into a lot of trouble (drinking, cutting class, guys...). My mom wasn't the cause, it was their own decisions.

This changes if it is a case I heard of recently. Parents were letting teens having a drinking party at their house. They didn't take away the keys, and one of the kids drove a couple others home, except he was drunk and so were they and one died, one was hurt, and (of course) the driver was fine. Should the parents be held accountable? Ya I think so. It was stupid for them not to at least take away the keys if they were going to allow that.

To an extent. If the parent teaches the child bad habits, then yes. But in many instances, you can bring the child up just fine, and they still go their own way. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. At a certain point, after the parents have tried everything they can, it is just out of their hands.

It is about responsibility. The parent does have a responsibility for their child, but the child has to learn a responsibility for their own actions. There is no perfect response or remedy. Sometimes it is easy to point the finger very directly at the parent and say ' You could have done more for your child' However alot of the time it is more of a grey area. 'What ifs' are all very well, but a child, especially when they start getting towards the teen years, needs to be accountable for their own actions.

no,we have a nightmare system of enticing people to have contempt or truth.parents only have minimum influance. the teacher has 7 or so hours per day, the playstation and t.v. gets the rest, the fashion industry tells them how to dress, the only way you can make parents fully responsable is if they had full influence and taught them at home, we dont want our evil system makers unloading all the blame onto the parents who are outnumbered and out influanced by outside influences, that are designed to brainwash parents teachers
and children alike.

9 times out of 10 children commit crimes because of the way their parents have brought them up.

I think that it should be compulsory for the parents of these children to go to parenting classes to learn how to control their children, and how to set them the right example.

Parents of kids that commit crimes are usually as bad. So, both should be held accountable. Parents should be held in jail, and kids in rehab if the offense is heavy enough.

Then again, the rehab should not be considered a punishment. It should rather be an honest attempt to help the misguided kids. Take a look at this:
