Water beds are not good for the back. The displacement of water doesn't allow for the configuration of the spine, and tends to sink in middle. If I were you, I'd look into a memory foam mattress. If you do some research, you can find no name brands that are just as good, but cost a lot less. There's a seller on EBay called 'completesleepshop'. They offer some of the best prices (shipping included) I've even seen in the states. I don't know if they ship overseas, but it can't hurt to ask. Maybe they can direct you to a more local resource?

The bed base should support you, the mattress should cushion you.
If you don't have a solid bed base, get a large sheet of plywood or chipboard to cover it under your mattress.
The mattress itself should be soft enough to fill your curves when you're lying on it. Too hard a mattress will tend to leave you very stiff in the morning, and can also cause shoulder and hip soreness.
An 'orthopaedic' mattress means very little by itself - orthopaedic mattresses are usually graded from 1 to 15 in terms of firmness, so it really is a matter of going to a shop and lying on a variety of mattresses to see what you think will suit you.
You can buy memory foam overlays to use on top of your mattress - it's about 2" thick and will help make you more comfy.
The main thing with OA is to keep your back as mobile as possible - the stiffer it is, the more pain you'll feel. Get going on some mobilising exercises and keep it as limber as you can.
Good luck.

Get a simmons mattress:
Simmons mattress is a one of the memory foam mattresses available in the market. Here we take a look at Simmons Beautyrest World Class Mattresses with memory foam pillowtop.
This model of Simmons mattress earned itself some excellent reviews. Few of its customers derived a great pleasure by sleeping on it. But there were more negative reviews on one of the major drawbacks of this mattress – price. Many stated that the product quality was not worth the steep price of $2,000.

I do not know about mattress, but have you ever considered an electric heating mattress pad. It covers your mattress, and it makes pain go away. I used to not sleep because of pain, and then I put the heated mattress pad and sleep all the way through the night.

Every one with back pain will most probably have a different strength matress.
I myself can only sleep on a matress that is as hard as the floor !
The best advice i can give you which is what i did is to lie down on every matress until you find one that is comfortable for you.
You might get some strange looks from people but at least you will have a comfy matress.
Good Luck

orthopaedic! we use these at work and are good, you should look to spend about £200 on one.
Don't go for a soft mattress. Order through a catalogue as these can be delivered. Sealy do a good one.

I would personally buy a firm mattress to make it easier to mave around, a softer one may be more comfortable but I find I get stuck in them.
