Is has virtually every sound format out there. I think that the best format right now is dolby digital Ex which plays 5.1 movies in 7.1 which I have. but there is also another format called Thx surround Ex. I was wondering which is better, and which types of movies would you use dolby digital Ex or Thx surround Ex. Whats the difference between the 2? Is there a format out on the market that is better than these 2?

Hi. The DVD should have the surround sound format printed on the back .So switch on the format that applies on your amp.You can also experiment by trying different formats to see if one is better than another.Sometimes this works better to give you a different sound which you may prefer than the standard arrangement.
I hope this helps. Cheers.

To answer the question you actually asked and not what the people were comfortable answering. I think the Select 2 sounds a little better. I think that SurroundEX is a little more harsh, and depending on the size of the room and distance from the speakers, I would recommend going with the Select 2, however you need to listen to both and see which you like more. And in response to some of the other posts, no not every high end amp will have THX certification. THey may not have wanted to pay for the testing to get the certification, or maybe they didn't pass. It is a very subjective certification however, so it depends solely on the person listening to it, and awarding the certification, as to whether or not a system gets it. Best of luck to you.

I can't tell you which one of the two is better, but there are two new formats which are much better than anything on the market.

Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. These are non-compressed formats, available on HD-DVD and BluRay.
