Its surprising how little people know about long range shooting, and how readily they are willing to give their opinion. That said, the best sniper rifle will not only be determined by the shooter but also by the scenario. There are many situations were a 50 cal rifle would be terribly suited. Swat teams have used rounds as small as 223 for sniper detail. The .338 Lapua has proved itself as a fantastic long range round and the rifle weighs less then half of the average 50. A lot of our troops are lugging 338s around now as well as 308. Like I said, the choice between the two will be determined by the mission and projected shots. The one round that outshines all others, even the 50, is the 408 cheytac. The guns weigh in around the same as the 50's but the round is still supersonic at 2500 yards. The snipers shot would then only be limited by his ability to acquire a target.

Although they were not called "snipers", the earliest American snipers were during the revolutionary war, the rifled flintlocks the colonists had were made for killing game at long distances, and it worked very well on the Redcoats. They were first called "snipers" in the British military, where if they were good enough marksmen to kill the elusive snipe, they were called snipers. The term used in the US was "skirmisher", or someone who shot from cover, long distances, to keep the enemy off balance. The term sniper was not adopted here in the US until the War Between the States, around 1860, and there were some notable long range strikes, some made with an air powered rifle rather than black powder.

That all depends on the tactical situation you are in. Is this close range like most police incidents (under 75 yards) or a sniper in a rifle platoon, or the scout sniper's the USMC have or some one taking down coyote and other predator at 1000+ yards. there are several best choices and each is unique to the situation.

Well the most successful sniper in History Simo Hahya used a standard issue Finnish Mosin 28/30 (without a telescopic Sight) to kill 546 Soviet troops in the space of 100 days. His comment about his success was that he practiced.

This should actually be posted in the "military" section. Since there is no "gun" section I understand your mistake, but sportsmen should not be confused with snipers or anything of that sort. It isn't a good image of hunters that we be seen as snipers as well as sportsmen. It's not helping the anit-gun, anti-hunting movements.
With that said:
I don't know about the best, but a really solid gun would be based on a Remington 700 action, a heavy free floated barrel, and maybe a glassbedded action depending on the gun.
7.62x51mm is a very accurate and powerful round for most work. .300 Winchester Magnums and .338 Lapuas allow you to reach out further. McMillan and Barrett .50 BMGs are best for extreme ranges and armor-piercing.
SniperCentral.com and SniperCountry.com have good articles and information.

The fifty calibre guns not withstanding I believe that the Remington 40XB was one of the finest available. I have owned several over the years and used them extensively on varmints out to five hundred yards. The accuracy is outstanding and the quality was unmatched in the price range. Just my opinion

For my money the Tactical Operations Inc, Tango 51 is the most reliable, and most accurate sniper rifle out of the box. They guarantee each one to rate at .25 moa with no adjustment. However, my FAVORITE rifle has to be my Barrett M95 (short version of the M82A1).

The US military uses a couple of different models.
Barrett 50BMG
Remington 700 in .308
A gun is only as good (or as bad) as the person behind it.
Sniping is 98% tactics, and 2% armament.

Probably a Barret 50, but my favorite is still the old 1903 Springfield 30-06! Its tried and true, reliable, and it killed a shitload of Germans and Japanese back in WWII! I also like the Mosin Nagant 91/30 (Incase you can't tell, I'm kind of into old war guns!)
