but, it's happening to me.

I should add we are both in our 30s, with our own life experiences, and just feel like when it's right, it's right, you know?

It depends. I won't say that 4 years is too long for everyone, but if you've been ready to be engaged for 3 of them and he's been putting it off, then yes there is a problem. If it's been 4 years and you're both just now at a point in your lives where you're ready, then it's all good.

However, if you started dating when you were 14 and want him to propose at 18, then no, it's not too long and you should probably wait another couple years just to see if the "real world" changes things.

Hope that all makes sense.

It appears to me that you already know this answer. If your partner has not decided that you are the one by now, then perhaps you are not. Have a talk with him, and tell him that it is decision making time. Tell him that he needs to make a decision within the next two months. You will know almost right away, because if he plans to back out, he will become more distant. Don't waste you life as I did for 12 years waiting for someone that may never commit to you.

Nothing is too long.

One of my coworkers was "in a relationship" with his girlfriend for 28 years (from age 22 to age 50), then they decided to get married. Of course they didn't want kids, so there wasn't a lot of importance to it. But they're happily married now.

Or, for a really weird story, my college english professor met his girlfriend at the age of 3 (in the sandbox) and then married her at 21, after 18 years of "dating". His only regret? He never learned how to ask a woman out...

I think it could take a long time, four years isn't long. If you two are very committed, who cares? Why the rush for the ring on the finger, if you're eventually going to get married, that's no problem.

it's not true actually. It depends on individual couple. If the couple is ready for marriage even if they are only dating for one yr or even less than that, they may get engagaed. I have heard of couples being together for more than 7 yrs and yet not getting engaged.
