As with anything else, ignorance aka not knowing, causing people to fear what they don't know or understand. So instead of learning about something differen't it is given a label. It would be my assumption that most Christians aren't interested in knowing the difference between a witch and a satanist. Why would they when they believe that the only way to get to heaven is through accepting Jesus Christ as your savior, outside of that, you are doomed to hell.

My suggestion, don't worry about getting Christians (or anyone else for that matter) to accept what you are or what you practice. As long as you are comfortable with it, outside opinions shouldn't matter.

It's not so much that people think that someone that practices witchcraft is a satanist, but the idea of witchcraft is condemned by scripture, so the act of it is seen as satanic. That isn't the same as being a satanist, however. Many people lump any pagan religion together and simply call them all satanic and even some call them satanists. They are not meaning that they are members of the church of satan, but that they are following something that the christian believes is "of satan".

Not every Christian thinks in this way. It is just the case of many fundamentalists that do not bother to study outside of their own religion. Many fundamentalist Christians do not see a purpose in studying other religions; therefore, many of them mix up terms without really meaning to at all. It is simply an ignorance of their meanings. More liberal Christians don't make that mistake because they are more likely the ones that know more about other religions and know the proper ways to term something.

While a wiccan is almost always a witch, a witch isn't always a wiccan. Witchcraft is basically just focused prayers and is used in many traditions. Wicca is a nature based religion where goddess and god are equally revered and all around us instead of just "up there somewhere". There are many paths of wicca, kinda like the different christian denominations. Many worship alone and many worship with covens. Most believe in an past and future lives, but not in heaven or hell or in the devil. Unlike some mainstream religions, no one is trying to scare you into believing or trying to convert you. Most wiccans don't care if you agree with what they believe. Their religious stories are recognized to be metaphor instead of taken literally. They are normal people, you most likely have sat beside a few on a bus and have worked with one without ever knowing. While some are open about their beliefs, many are "in the broom closet" because of stereotypes and Hollywood and bible made preconceptions. Despite many people's beliefs, wiccans are not evil and do not worship any being called the devil.

Many people think that in real witches were like the ones shown in modern day television, I mean nice and helpful with useful magical powers. but in real in ancient times, when witchcraft was more prevalent, witchcraft had human sacrifices as well as direct contact with the devil. There is a very controversial book by Margaret Alice Murray called "The Witch-Cult in Western Europe". this was written after a lot of research into the older practices of witchcraft and mostly it also shows that originally witchcraft included direct contact with the devil and worship and obtaining powers from him. If you do want to read more about the article I will give a link below. Once you read it you will know that ancient witchcraft was really associated with direct dealings with the devil and satan. Maybe modern witchcraft does not include all this.. all these might be subtle, but still its coming from something which had evil traditions. So suppose you yourself had this kind of concept of witchcraft, you might have a tendency to look at people who follow witchcraft in this manner. So if people don't have much knowledge all they know is that ancient witchcraft did involve directly dealing with the devil and so they think the same of modern people as well, so maybe that is the reason they look upon you in this manner. I am not justifying people who have wrong concepts but just enlightening you as well in case you did not know. Hope its not offended you.

It is not just Christians.... it is in the old testement and practiced by Jews and Muslims as well...

the bible says suffer not a witch to live...and in other places says they should be put to death...

the bible calls witchcraft evil

the bible says all evil is of the devil or satan

so by default... witch = satanist

satanist is a generic term like hamburger.... whether it is a whopper from burger king, big mac from mcdonalds or single from wendys it is still a burger ...

does that make sense of the general disposition

please note that this does not imply that Christian people have ill will towards witches or would treat them strangely, but it does indicate that Christian people would evaluate your decision making skills about what is important in life to be less than skillful and that is about it from this Christians point of view

Any mainstream religious faction...Christian & Chatholic being two of the most power sorts...deem anything outside of their beliefs as against their God, ergo, Satanic.

It also stems from their trying to remove themselves from their responsibility in the horrible tortures & murders of the Inquisitions...Lots of Love went on there, huh? But they claim they were right in that they were destroying "evil"...another example of mass killing in the name of an unconditionally loving God...makes sense...NOT!

Wiccans know the pentagram's true meaning, they know the universal structures are at our command, they know these gifts to be Godhead given, and have never negated the female balance of such.

It is of little use to argue yourself as a point to get across...simply be that witch you are LOL--pun intended...no need to flaunt your beingness, but if asked, state yourself as Wiccan, and if the asker ensues a debate...give a loving smile with the knowing of their limitations in this life, and move on.

I might say something like, "Goodness! My cat is calling, our brew must be ready...see you another time." but that's just me on a rough day...please be be sweeter, okay? Remember...Do No Harm!...LOL

Jesus said that whoever is not with him is against him. Also, the conflict in the bible is between God and Satan. God's right to rule has been challenged, so if you're not doing it God's way, you're promoting Satan's contention that there is a better way than God's way, hence you are all lumped up as supporters of Satan. Witch, Buddhist, atheist, it doesn't matter. Not God and His way = supporting Satan.

I don't think that. The wiccans and other neo-pagans I know (one's actually a good friend of mine), actually think that satanists are idiots, same with me.
