i havent really asked any questions about god yet, but why do some people on here write god like g-d? god is a figure, not an actuall name, so not saying gods name in vein is not saying the word god in vien. he has a name, halo-i dont know if thats spelled right, but god is not his name, its his title, so why do you write it that way? just curious, please dont get offended

It comes from the Jewish tradition. Jews do not say the name of God. The true name of God according to scripture is Yahweh. It translates as I am. That is the name that God gave to Moses when Moses asked him "who do I say sent me?" God said, "I am". Jews believe that is the actual name of God. It is so holy, and they are so unholy, then they have no right to even speak that name. They are not holy enough to speak the name of God. Some people still hold that tradition. They believe they are defiling God if they speak his name because he is so holy. So, out of respect, they will type g-d. It's an act of respect. Yes, God is a generic term; however, the name that is comes from in Hebrew (Elohim) is still associated with the God named Yahweh. I hope that makes sense to you and answers your question.

The name of the Old Testament god is Yahweh.
The Hebrew people do not utter this sacred name for fear of not saying it correctly and thus offending their deity. Also the ancient Hebrews did not wish for the name of their god to be spoken by the heathen nations surrounding Israel. Language is very important in the Hebrew tradition and they believe that when you speak the name Yahweh it thunders through all of creation and even the demons tremble.
In early Hebrew texts the name was substituted for the moniker Adoni which means Lord.
The are several conflicting ideas as to why modern Jews use G-d when writing about their deity. One is that God spelled backwards is dog and they find this to be offensive because in Hebrew, letter placement is key. You can find out more about this by looking up the House of Yahweh located in Abilene, Texas.

God is the respectful title I was taught to use. I also use the term Supreme Being and Higher Power. It does not really matter what you call Him, as long as it is used respectfully. Personal opinion, and I am not offended, you asked a good question. If mine is not the answer you seek, I hope someone can answer it for you.

Mostly Jews write God, G-d, out of deep reverence for God. There was a time that the name of God was not written or spoken at all, out of respect.

Most Orthodox Jews, and many Jews of other denominations, believe it wrong to write the word "God" on any substance which can be destroyed. Therefore, they will write "G-d" or "Gd" as what they consider a more respectful symbolic representation.

Respect is only part of it. In some religions, it is believed that anytime you write "God," you will be unable to take back that statement. So, if you made a claim and then later found that you were in the wrong, you wouldn't be able to take back your word. That's why.

It's a Jewish thing, I can't remember the reason why they can't say or spell God, but they can't. Just part of their religion

I know this isn't what your asking, but God's name is Yahweh (in Hewbrew) and is rendered Jehovah (in English).
