Are you aware of the new guidelines eliminating many of the previous indications for antibiotic prophylaxis? Go to www.ada.org. It is featured right on the home page as a new item. There are very few indications remaining, including:
Prosthetic valve
History of previous infectious endocarditis
COngenital heart disease (certain forms)
Cardiac transplant patient who develop valvular pathology

Go check it out. The USA is finally joining the rest of the world.

I've been hearing hints of this for several months from my docs. Not long ago, we'd turn a (pre-med) patient away if they forgot their medication.

It always seemed over-kill to me for somebody who'd been told they once had a heart murmer as a kid. The effects of too many antibiotics has got to be worse than the very slight risk of infection.

No, I wasn't aware of the new guidelines. I will definitely check out ADA's website. If my doc knew about it, he sure didn't tell me! Thank you so much for the info.
