boxing isnt quite what it used to be given the $50 payperview fights and the lack of big names like they had in the 70s to the 90s. what do you think?

I agree with you. Especially in the heavy weight division. I think the best athletes are playing other sports. I also think that Boxing is in bigger trouble now because of the emergence of mixed martial arts fighting.

That fight was a disgrace and it was all Hopkins fault. Roy is so far past his prime, looks so old and flat that even a Hopkins win would not mean anything. Did you notice the size of the ring? It was the smallest ring possible to give Hopkins ever advantage in this fight. So not only did he have the ring advantage going in, he had his glove choice and still he repeatedly hit Jones low, blantanly headbutted him and whacked him on the back of the head continually. When Jones retaliated with a tap on the back of the head Hopkins twice went into the worst antics ive seen, he went down off a low blow that was not a low blow and my question is why? Was he tired? was he having a hard time with a Robert Jones Jr? (It does not seem appropriate to call him Roy Jones Jr anymore) What ever Hopkins was thinking is beyond me, but I can tell you this I lost all respect for Hopkins, I always considered Hopkins a throw back, and old school boxer and last night tarnished his career. As for UFC and boxing, its much easier to sell PPV when you own all the known fighters in the sport, White can put any two fighters together at his choosing, he can stack a card and could easily stage a fight if he chose too. If Golden Boy Promotions owned every known fighter, had free tv to build them up and could make anybody fight anybody then wow it would be a hell of a show. Even with Dana White having all the control and owning all the fighters he still puts on a **** show like the GSP event, what a pile of crap. I think I enjoyed the Hopkins bullshit more then GSP, at least we got some laughs out of the two geriatrics trying to be fighters. The problem with boxing is not the fighters its the promoters and sanctioning bodies that ruin the greatest sport of all time.

i would have to agree. back in the day, boxing was THE sport. and i personally think that there won't be for a long time a stretch of quality boxing in so much depth than during 70s-90s. Muhammad ali, Joe frazier, sonny liston, oscar de la hoya, kostya tzu just to name a few. i think this line stopped at mike tyson when he took the spirit out of the sport. some of the things he said were just sickening

Don King ruined boxing. It might never make a comeback.

When I was a kid, (50s) my dad I watched Gillette's Friday Night Fights. You could always see young fighters work their way up. By the time they were Big you had seen them maybe 4 or 5 times and felt like you knew them.

I think you are right, the glory days of boxing are behind us, and even Mike Tyson pounding the snot out of questionable opposition was a damn sight better than what we are subjected to today. Nothing lasts forever, even the mediocrity plaguing today's professional boxing, given time it will change. Patience may not be pleasant, but we have no choice, we must wait it out until skill and competency replace our current situation.

concerning the ppv, boxing has always been a money business and will always and will continue to be that way, and the $50 specials make money for all involved in it

the lack of fighters compared to 20 years ago is simply due to the fact that no one truly wants to box...most kids now see the money in other sports such as basketball and football, and see less risk in it than in boxing, and therefore they don't take any interest in the sport
