I have read it many ways. Probably the most beneficial one was the format that gets you through in a year. It involves a reading starting at the begining of the old Testament, Then a reading in Psalms, starting with the first one. and a new Testament reading starting with Matthew 1. Follow through the Bible this way until you finish.

I have also read straight through a number of times. This can be discouraging because people usually get stuck in Leviticus because it is full of lists and rules and reads like the stock market page.

Some Bible translations that you can get from a Christian bookstore have formats for reading through.

Many people recommend, if you are totally unfamiliar that you start in the new Testament with the Gospel of John. It is my favorite gospel.

I have read it many times. I started from front to back. If I'd started to write anything I wouldn't have made it through the first time.
I tell you why. I have had the honor of pastoring a church and youth pastor in the past. When you go to study what the Holy Spirit lays upon your heart you can end up with so much. To me it is so interesting, and on going.
Enjoy while you read. If you don't understand everything don't worry, just enjoy what you do. You will find that through the weeks and years of your life as you continue to read God will give you understanding of more and more.

Here's my method (although, I have yet to read the entire Bible.)

I am starting to read from front to back. I also will read a chapter or two in psalms so that I may sing praise to God. I will read a chapter from Proverbs and then a random chapter in the New Testament.

I didn't time myself. I suppose it took about three weeks. I just read it from front to back. I didn't write down any questions. I'm an atheist, for Pete's sake.
