You are supposed to recycle it. Sometimes offices get many more than they need and they put them on freecycle (Yahoo.com/groups) for others to make use of. Apartment buildings do not always get enough and they are happy to get more - even if they are a year or two older.

Rip it up. It's a great way to get rid of it and get muscle. But if you don't want to do that then just throw it in the trash.
